BMJII Governor Takes Stand on Recent Developments in the IMF and WB

BMJII Governor, Dr. Mahmud Bahmani, who was attending the G24 meeting, assessed the forum as being very fruitful. He pointed out that presence of majority of Muslim countries supports forming a united stand to work its way to protect these countries legal rights. In his remarks he pointed out the following:

1. Legitimacy of the resolutions and the extent of impact of IMF activities, depend on fair distribution of quotas or voting power of the member countries. Therefore, any increase in the quotas must reflect the economic developments of the countries. The quotas must be formulated to facilitate the transfer of at least 5 percent of the quotas from the developed countries to the developing countries. The transfer should not be a burden on the developing countries. For example, it is an indispensable fact that according to Iran's GDP based on the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP), our country is the 17th economic power of the world; it is essential that this fact be reflected in the scenarios of the IMF. There are of course countries like Afghanistan, Ghana and Pakistan in our jurisdiction that need additional support. With regard to the entire member countries of the jurisdiction, our basic demand is the increase of voting power of the jurisdiction. That is, we only support increase or allocation of IMF member countries quotas, if it results to Iran increase of quotas.
2. The current 24 seats of the Governing Board is in agreement with its functions; the vital issue is to keep the number of the developing countries seats. The present structure of International Monetary and Finance Committee must change in a way that the managing director and high ranking officials of the IMF are selected on the basis of competency and in a transparent manner regardless of their nationality. Nationality among experts and staff of the IMF must also be broadened to let in greater diversity.
